Red bat, Sable Island, October 8 2002.  It was a sunny afternoon and the characteristic bright rusty red head and pale buffy flank were clearly visible.  Red bats are the most abundant of the "tree bats" in North America, and are found in forested areas east of the Rocky Mountains.  They roost in deciduous and evergreen trees, and are well-camouflaged - hanging amongst the foliage, red bats resemble similarly-coloured dead leaves and pine cones.
