A specimen of a red bat, preserved with wings outspread, at the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History. Specimens of wayward bats and birds, such as those found on Sable Island, are of particular interest because some may represent `outliers' (i.e. individuals at the edge of their normal range for their species), and study of such individuals could provide some understanding of colonization events and range extensions, or of selection processes that might lead to speciation (the process of species formation). |
