Sable Island is a 45-km-long sand bar, oriented roughly west-east, with a maximum width of 1.5 km. The shoreline comprises long uninterrupted sand beach along the north and south sides (this amounts to about 90 km of beach). Between January 1993 and December 2002, 101 beached bird surveys were carried out covering a total linear distance of >7700 km.
