In any season, storm waves can carry away large volumes of beach sand, causing impassable `choke points'. Although such narrow sections come and go, while they persist, travelling the length of Sable Island becomes very difficult, and parts of the beach are accessible only for a few hours before and after low tide. Vehicle traffic is permitted only on the beach, so narrow spots can not be passed by making detours over the vegetated dunes. |
