Oiled auks: Razorbill Alca torda; Atlantic Puffin Fratercula arctica, and three Thick-billed Murres Uria lomvia. Auks (or alcids) are swimming and diving birds of the coast and open ocean, and most use their wings to "fly" underwater as they forage for food. Because these species spend much of their time on/under the water, they have a greater exposure to oil pollution in the marine environment. |
