An oiled and seriously weakened juvenile Northern Gannet on the beach in October - this bird had only a nickel-sized patch of oil on its breast. Even a very small amount of oil penetrating the feathers, decreases a bird's insulation, waterproofing and buoyancy, leading to death due to hypothermia and starvation.
