A Common Loon, found in late March with a large patch of heavy oil on its flank and belly. Loons were not commonly found among the beached bird corpses on Sable Island, but those that were all occurred between December and April. During non-breeding season in Atlantic Canada, loons move to coastal marine waters where they may be exposed to oil contamination.
