Oiled Dovekies Alle alle found during a beached bird survey on Sable Island. Most oiled auks - razorbills, murres and puffins - were moderately to heavily contaminated (i.e. oil on 5% to 50% of the body), but a number of corpses were entirely covered, encased in a thick and uniform coating of heavy black oil. Over 90% of such specimens were Dovekies. Dovekies are the smallest of the auk species found in the North Atlantic. |
