A lump of beach-cast oil, weighing about 1 kg. Over time - days, weeks, or longer - oil washed ashore on Sable Island mixes with, or is buried by, sand. Such large lumps are sometimes washed up beyond the high tide line, and can persist for years with a hard outer crust. On hot summer days, oil oozes out from the crust. During the 1993-2002 survey program, very few beachings of large lumps were observed.
