Garside, Debra. 2010. The Wild Horses of Sable Island - A Horseman's Journey. Self-published. 80 pages.

Note: Debra Garside visited Sable Island in August 2009 and April 2010. She spent a total of about five weeks photographing the horses and their habitat.

Her particular interest in photographing horses began in 2008 when a fellow photographer and mentor suggested she focus her nature photography on wild horses, as she seemed to have an intimate connection with equines, a connection that was evident in her work. Debra explained: “Further research… led me to believe that the Sable horses would be my best candidates for intimate wild horse photographs, as most other 'managed' wild horse herds did not act 'natural' around humans and were difficult to get close to.” That plus the island’s unique landscape and Debra’s love of barren, remote places drew her to Sable.

Regarding her time on the island, Debra explains: “The horses and the island far exceeded my expectations. With weather as wild as the horses, it remains unmatched for me in terms of experience and artistic fodder. One can never be the same after a visit to Sable Island.”

Debra also photographs wild horses in Alberta, Montana and Wyoming, but her images of the Sable Island horses are the most popular. “Their long manes and the story of their survival make them irresistible!”
