Campbell, L. 1994. Sable Island Shipwrecks - Disaster and Survival at the North Atlantic Graveyard. Nimbus Publishing Limited, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Extract from Preface: “This book is by no means a history of Sable Island shipwrecks or of the Sable lifesaving service. It is a collection of accounts of selected wrecks in the context of the evolution of Sable Island. The wrecks have been chosen, from a documented compilation of nearly three hundred lost vessels, for their historical import and for the inherent appeal of their stories. Also a factor, as with all written history, was the amount of information available. A caution for the reader: while this selection of shipwrecks typifies losses at the old Graveyard of the Atlantic, it magnifies the number of castaways and deaths in the average known Sable disaster. The writing aims to appeal to the general reader rather than the scholar, but every fact or judgement may be documented. From the most gruesome disaster to the weather, the descriptions derive from contemporary accounts, usually eyewitness reports. The tragedy, drama, heroism, mystery are a natural part of Sable Island’s past.” |
