Selected Bird Sightings at Sable Island

The number in brackets indicates the minimum number of individuals seen during the period.

 

Snow Goose (5) - January 1, 5 (4 adult and 1 immature, all white morph) at Gallinule Pond.

 

Snow Bunting (>20) - December 21-22, a flock of 8 on the west spit, and 15 on south beach east of No3 (probably more numerous).

 

American Coot (5) - December 22 through January 10, a group of 5 at the west ponds.

 

Ring-necked Duck (2) - December 22, 1 male at the west ponds, and December 26-27, 1 female near No3.

 

Northern Harrier (1) - December 22, 1 flying over inland heath east of No3.

 

American Kestrel (1) - December 24, 1 male near West Light.

 

Peregrine (1) - between December 27 and February 28, sightings of 1 bird at various locations between the west ponds and East Light (possibly more than one individual).

 

Semipalmated Plover (2) - January 14, 2 on the south beach near No.3.

 

Killdeer (1) - December 26, 1 along the ponds road.

 

Ruddy Turnstone (2) - December 21, 1 on the west tip; December 22 & 26, 2 near No3; and January 14, 1 on the west spit.

 

Purple Sandpiper (1) - January 3, 1 on the beach south of the west ponds.

 

Sanderling (>300) -  December 22, >300 on the south beach between the Station and No3.

 

Dunlin (3) - December 22, 3 with Sanderlings on the south beach between the Station and No3; January 14, 1 in same area.

 

Northern Flicker (1) - December 27 and March 4, 1 near West Light (possibly two individuals).

 

Northern Mockingbird (1) - December 27, 1 near West Light.

 

Bohemian Waxwing (3) - December 26, 3 adults near the wind turbine towers.

 

Yellow-rumped Warbler (>20) - between December 24 and January 12, >20 near the Station.
