Selected Bird Sightings at Sable Island

Summer – June 21 to September 22 , 2007

The number in brackets indicates the minimum number of individuals seen during the period.

Northern Gannet (3) - September 3, 3 adults flying west along the south beach were the first of the autumn gannets sighted.

Double-crested Cormorant (1) - between July 26 & September 14, several sightings of 1 first year bird at various locations (likely more than one individual).

Yellow-crowned Night-heron (1) - August 29, 1 juvenile at the west ponds.

Little Blue Heron (1) - July 26 & August 1, 1 immature at Iris Pond.

Great Egret (1) - August 1-21, numerous sightings of 1 at the west ponds.

Wood Duck (1) - June 25, 1 male at the west ponds.

Green-winged Teal (4) - September 1, 4 at the west ponds.

American Wigeon (4) - September 13, 4 females at No3.

Blue-winged Teal (1) - September 1, 1 at the west ponds.

Northern Harrier (1) - September 5, 1 at the west ponds.

Black-bellied Plover (>50) - July 30, 1 on south beach near No3; August 7, >50 on the west spit.

Willet (3) - July 29, 3 together on the south beach east of No3.

Greater Yellowlegs (3) - July 20, 3 at the west ponds (no later count done).

Lesser Yellowlegs (>90) - July 10, 1 at the west ponds; July 20, >90 at the west ponds.

Solitary Sandpiper (1) - July 25, 1 at the east end of the No3 ponds.

Whimbrel (>40) - July 25, 4 on Steeple Dune; August 1, >40 in one group east of No3; September 6, >20 in one group near the Station.

Ruddy Turnstone (56) - July 28, 1 on the west spit; August 29, 56 on the north & south beaches between the Station & the east tip.

Pectoral Sandpiper (9) - July 25, 1 at the west ponds; August 1-4, 9 at various ponds between West & East Lights.

Short-billed Dowitcher (>30) - July 17-27, >30 at the west ponds.

Long-tailed Jaeger (1) - August 29, 1 juvenile/subadult chased by a single tern, westward along the east spit.

Black-legged Kittiwake (>25) - August 29, 1 adult at the west tip; September 11, >25 (mostly adults) on the east tip.

Black Tern (4) - August 29, 4 feeding at the north side of west tip; September 17, 1 flying west along the north beach. All first summer birds.

Mourning Dove (1) - July 14, 1 settled in the Station yard, but was driven away by a mob of >20 terns; July 16-29, 1 (likely the same bird) feeding nervously at the Station.

Common Nighthawk (1) - July 2, 1 chased by terns over the Station area.

Belted Kingfisher (1) - September 10 & 17, 1 at the west ponds.

Eastern Kingbird (3) - July 23, 1 at the Station; September 14, 1 at the Station & 1 at East Light.

Red-eyed Vireo (1) - June 21, 1 soggy bird on a very wet day, west of West Light.

Tree Swallow (>20) - August 18, 1 at Galli Pond; August 29, >20 on the south beach near the Station; September 11, 1 east of No3.

Bank Swallow (3) - May 17, 3 at the west ponds.

Barn Swallow (7) - June 23, 3 at the Station; July 26, 1 near No3; August 16, 3 west of West Light.

Red-breasted Nuthatch (>5) - July 27, 2 in the West Light-Station area; between August 1 & September 11, >5 birds at various locations. Probably more numerous.

American Robin (1) - September 3, 1 at the Station.

Gray Catbird (1) - June 30, 1 near West Light.

Water Pipit (4) - September 11, 4 at the west ponds.

Cedar Waxwing (>60) - June 24, 15 adults at the Station; July 27, 2 adults at the Station; August 24, 10 (adults & juveniles) at the Station; September 10, >20 at West Light & >40 at the Station.

Cape May Warbler (1) - August 28, 1 west of West Light.

Black-&-White Warbler (2) - August 23, 1 at the Station; September 6, 2 in West Light-Station area.

Black-throated Blue Warbler (1) - September 17, 1 male west of West Light.

Black-throated Green Warbler (1) - September 14, 1 along ponds road.

Prairie Warbler (2) - August 26, 1 at West Light; September 10, 1 at the Station; September 14, 1 at East Light.

Blackpoll Warbler (1) - September 11, 1 near West Light.

Yellow Warbler (3) - between August 6 & 25, at least 3 birds in West Light-Station area.

Hooded Warbler (1) - September 10, 1 at the Station.

Northern Waterthrush (1) - August 12 & 21, 1 near West Light.

American Redstart (4) - June 24, 1 at West Light; August 15, 2 at West Light; September 17, 1 along the ponds road.

White-throated Sparrow (1) - September 11, 1 at the Station.

Bobolink (2) - September 7, 2 near the Station.

Red-winged Blackbird (1) - July 14, 1 female at the Station.

Northern Oriole (8) - September 7, 1 at the Station; September 14, 3 near West Light & 5 at East Light.

White-winged Crossbill (1) - August 15, 1 male west of West Light.

American Goldfinch (2) - August 28, 2 (male & female) at the Station.
