Great Cormorants - an immature bird standing on a roll of snowfence at West Light, September 6 1994; and an adult walking in heath near the Station, April 15 1999. The adult was later found dead. The two cormorant species of northeastern North America, Great Cormorant and Double-crested Cormorant, are seen on or near Sable Island, usually in small numbers during spring and autumn. While both species commonly feed in the freshwater ponds, they are also seen on the beach, and on the sea just beyond the surf zone. |
