Ring-necked Duck juvenile, September 24 1993. This species has been seen in all months but January, February and July.  Ring-necked Ducks obtain their food from the bottom mainly by diving.  In November 1996, as two Ring-necked Ducks were diving for food in a freshwater pond, two Wood Ducks swam nearby, waiting and watching, and whenever a Ring-neck surfaced with some vegetation, the Wood Ducks hurried towards it and `grabbed and nibbled' the material pulled up by the Ring-neck.

The young duck shown here was unable to fly when found on West Ponds.  It was kept and fed for two weeks on the island, then sent back to a vet on the mainland for examination, feeding and release - it flew off with wild ducks a week later.
