Thick-billed Murres on the beach, April 23 2002.  This species nests from Newfoundland north, and its overwintering range extends south to waters off eastern Nova Scotia.  Individuals - showing no external oiling or injury - have been seen on the beach in January and in March through August.  When approached, some flew energetically from the beach, some seemed entirely unconcerned when approached, and a few, obviously in poor condition, scrambled weakly towards the water.
