Feather-lined nest and eggs of a Northern Pintail, early June. As incubation advances, the brooding duck uses its own feathers (down) to line the nest. The source of these feathers is the "brood patch", an area on the duck's underside which is plucked bare to facilitate heat flow from the adult to the eggs. The feather-lining serves to insulate and cushion the eggs. |
