A juvenile Common Tern, mid-July, hiding near the sill of a building at the DFO camp. Like the young of Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls, tern chicks leave the nest after a few days but remain nearby, and are fed by both parents.  Unlike gull chicks, they are fed whole prey (usually small fish), not regurgitant. Age at first flight is about 22-28 days, but the young terns may remain with parents for a month or more. Later in the summer on Sable Island, it is common to large numbers of "brown-backs" standing on the beach, some still being fed by adults.
