Recently hatched Black-legged Kittiwake chicks on Sable Island, July 6 1997.  Unlike the young of the ground-nesting gulls (such as Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls), kittiwake young are conspicuous, and remain at the nest until fully fledged (i.e. ready to fly). Age at first flight is 34-58 days, but the young birds may return to the nest at night for several weeks. They are fed by both parents.
