Boreal Owl - this bird was found on the morning of April 29 2000, roosting in a pile of whale bones near an isolated building.  A species of dense northern woodlands, Boreal Owls are strictly nocturnal, normally roosting during daylight in thick cover, close to a tree trunk.  They feed mainly on small mammals - voles, mice, small squirrels etc, none of which are available on Sable - and also eat small birds and insects.
