Lateral and dorsal views of the bill of the Black Skimmer corpse found on Sable Island (most head/neck plumage missing). This species feeds by “skimming” low over the surface of the water and slicing through the water with its blade-like lower mandible. When prey (a small fish) is touched, the upper bill snaps closed, capturing the prey. This type of foraging is called tactile feeding. |
