On October 29th, following Hurricane Wilma, a dozen Yellow-billed Cuckoos Coccyzus americanus were sighted on Sable Island. Far greater numbers – 100s - were seen along the coast of mainland Nova Scotia within days of the hurricane. But actual numbers of storm-driven cuckoos, both on Sable Island and the mainland, were probably much larger. This is alarming – this species has suffered precipitous population decline throughout its range in southern Canada, the United States, and northern Mexico.
