Soon after Hurricane Wilma, large numbers of swallows – singletons, and flocks of up to 30 birds – were seen on Sable Island. Of those close enough for identification, most were Barn Swallows Hirundo rustica (>50), and Tree Swallows Tachycineta bicolor (>20). On October 29th, eight emaciated Barn Swallows were found dead near the doorsill of an East Light building. A solitary Tree Swallow was seen feeding at the west ponds on November 14th. |
