A Leach’s Storm-petrel Oceanodroma leucorhoa found trapped in a water bucket. These small birds (about the size of a robin) are seldom seen on or close to the island in daylight. However, on August 14 1993 during 30 kt northeasterly gales, 100s were flying eastward along the north beach surf zone. Based on several timed counts during the day, there may have been close to 1000 petrels moving through the storm. With the driving rain and blowing sand it was not possible to identify the species – they were assumed to be Leach’s. However, Wilson’s Storm-petrel Oceanites oceanicus is known to be common near the island (Brown et al. 1975). |
