Leach’s Storm-petrels now nest on Sable Island. Most nesting petrels have established colonies under buildings, walkways and piles of lumber. A few of have successfully made burrows into banks beneath well-vegetated terrain. The horizontal burrows of storm-petrels can be up to a metre long, but it’s not known if birds have been able to excavate to such lengths in the island’s sandy substrate. |
