An adult Great Cormorant walking in heath near the Station, April 15. Since 1992, about 60 have been seen on Sable during March to June and August to November, with roughly half of all sightings in September-October. In Nova Scotia this species breeds mostly on eastern Cape Breton Island, and a substantial part of the population winters off New England. The two cormorant species of northeastern North America – Great and Double-crested P. auritus – are seen every year on or near the island. The latter are more numerous on Sable – in the last fifteen years >380 have been recorded.
