An American Bittern at the west ponds, October 7. It forages mostly by standing still at the edge of water or in shallow areas, sometimes by walking slowly and seizing prey with a sudden thrust of the bill. The bittern feeds mostly on fish, and also eats other organisms including frogs, tadpoles, aquatic insects, snakes. However, on Sable there are no frogs or snakes – the bird must dine on invertebrates and small fish (i.e. mummichogs Pungitius pungitius and sticklebacks Fundulus heteroclitus). |
