A juvenile Red-breasted Merganser on Sable Island. First noted as a nesting species by Gilpin (1858), these ducks are present on the island in all months, with 25-50 birds usually overwintering. During late autumn and winter they are often seen on the ocean, just beyond the surf zone. If they are feeding out there, they are likely eating sandlance, Ammodytes species. |
