Sanderlings Calidris alba on the north beach at low tide, October 7. This species is a relatively abundant migrant and regular winter resident on Sable. Since 1992, at least 300 to 600 birds have been seen each year. It is present year round, with 100s on the island in all months except June (during which only three individuals have been noted). Most Sanderlings breed far above the Arctic Circle. In eastern North America, they migrate southward along the Atlantic coast, and winter from Nova Scotia south to the West Indies and southern South America. |
