Three White-rumped Sandpipers Calidris fuscicollis (and the Western Sandpiper on the left) feeding on the wet sandflat area around Lake Wallace, November 13. White-rumps are present on Sable during June through November, with >200 counted in August and October. They are likely more numerous – in late summer and early autumn the birds are scattered throughout the island, inland at ponds and on the beaches. This species is a very long-distance migrant. In fall, many make a nonstop flight from eastern Canada to northern South America. |
