A immature Long-tailed Jaeger, August 10. This is the smallest and most elegant of the three jaeger species. It nests in the Arctic and alpine tundra, where it’s the most abundant and widespread of the jaegers. During the non-breeding season, it migrates far offshore and obtains at least some of its food by pirating fish from other birds. When seen around Sable this jaeger is often engaged in a high-speed pursuit of a tern – flipping and diving and swooping (in a relaxed sort of way) until the harried tern drops its fish.
