Three skulls collected from a Cuvier's beaked whale (right), a Sowerby's Beaked whale (middle) and a Harbour porpoise (left). All three are toothed whale species but they have very differently-shaped skulls. The Harbour porpoise (adult length is usually 1.5-1.6 m) is the smallest cetacean found in waters off eastern Canada. (Thanks to Merel Dalebout, Whitehead Lab, Dalhousie University, for the Cuvier's beaked whale identification.)
