In spring 2005, as sand was scoured away by late winter winds, a cache of old 45 gallon diesel fuel drums appeared in the East Light area on Sable Island. The drums could have been buried there since the early 1970s. After the light was automated, and the house was no longer used by a light keeper, researchers with both Fisheries & Oceans Canada, and Dalhousie University, occupied the house as a seasonal field camp. The fuel would have been used for heating and for tractor operation. |
