It is likely that the twelve drums were buried by wind-blown sand during months when the building was unoccupied, and once buried, they were forgotten. All the drums were heavily rusted, and fuel was seeping into the sand from tiny holes caused by the corrosion. It was a warm spring day when they were found, and the smell of the seeping fuel was strong.
