Centaury was introduced from Europe and occurs in Nova Scotia, Quebec to Michigan, south to Georgia, and in British Columbia. Although its distribution is very restricted in North America, centaury is widespread in Europe. It has been suggested that centaury may be a native plant on Sable Island (St. John 1921).
