New York Aster Aster novi-belgii (Aster Family - Asteraceae) in mid-September. The name is from "aster", Greek for star, referring to the shape of the flowers; novi-belgii means "of New Belgium" (or New Netherlands) which was an early name for New York. Aster is found in most vegetation communities on Sable Island.
