Once a foal is standing, soon after birth, it shows what has been called a “following response” – the foal will walk towards its mother and follow her when she moves on. Some newborn foals will follow anything large and moving, such as another horse, or a person. However, mares with very young foals usually threaten other horses that come too near, and will quickly place themselves between their foal and any approaching horse (or person).
