During its first morning of life, a Sable Island foal investigates his mother – licking her heels - still not quite organized regarding the source of mother’s milk. While the foal is seeking the teat, the mare often stands still, or sometimes takes a few steps to bring her udder closer to the foal’s head. If the foal’s fumbling is prolonged, the mare usually resumes grazing for a while.
