When the foal is ready to nurse it usually pushes its nose against the mare's udder and this action causes release or letdown of milk. During a nursing bout, the foal often sucks from both teats, sometimes moving back and forth between the two teats several times. The foal can reach both teats from one side and does not have to move around its mother.
