Yearlings can be fine playmates, but foals seem to prefer the company of other foals. As they get older, foals venture away from their mothers to approach, sniff, nuzzle and nibble other foals within their family band. Sometimes a foal will leave its family band and wander over to investigate and play with youngsters in another family band for a while.
