Dec 29, 2006: was looking at this site and read what the goverment might do and am not a bit impressed at this.... Please don't let this happen… Thank You Dec 28, 2006: If you need funding for your work, did you ever think of selling the right to name the horses? You could always reserve the right to ensure it was tasteful and unique…like with naming the stars. You could sell the right to name on ebay even, and make some good money to help protect these wild beauties. Thanks for listening. Dec 24, 2006: Awesome site! Washington, DC - USA Dec 20, 2007: is there a possibility to come and visit the island in summer 07 with my family for the night, and possibly do some photography? Thanks you… Dec 16, 2006: We just watched the movie "Touching Wild Horses" and then we googled Sable Island to learn more about it. Your webpage is fantastic; we love the fabulous pictures and in-depth information. I will send the link of your page to several of my friends, especially to remind everyone about the consequences of ocean littering. Having just finished an environmental science class (with a textbook featuring one of your photos--of a seal with a deadly net 'necklace') I am determined to do something actively against this increasing problem. Thank you for all your work. Dec 15, 2006: hi, I am working on a school project on "dangerous landforms" I came to this site and I found some useful information! I also LOVED the pictures of the foals, they remind me of some foals I know... SO CUTE!!! Anyway who comes up with the names of these horses anyway? Dec 14, 2006: nice horses Dec 13, 2006: Wow, what an interesting site. Being a gardener, I particularly like the flowers. Dec 07, 2006: Playing about with google earth I "discovered" sable island. I have to say a great and informative website. Ive saved it in my favourites. Thanks …Dublin, Ireland Dec 06, 2006: Dear Friends, I stumbled across your website today while doing a search for "winter solstice" information.... I saw one of the beautiful images from your site, noted the unusual name - and clicked! Anyway, it looks like your island is a wonderful corner of the planet, and I enjoyed looking through the various images, etc. I'm a horticulturist down by Chicago, and a nature lover in general… Best of luck to you and your group. Have a happy and healthy holiday (and solstice!)… Oak Park, IL Dec 05, 2006: We liked all of it. Thank you! My Granfather used to tell us stories of this mysterious island on the way to Halifax from Liverpool. Dec 01, 2006: Hi, Great pictures ,history. Very interesting
site. I,ll book it on my trip back east. Dec 01, 2006: I really really like your site but some of the pictures are gross.I liked the puffy baby birds. Dec 01, 2006: I like your information the seals cut in half by sharks was cool.you realy need a game on this website or people will think this website sucks Dec 01, 2006: I think you should have a kid's section with some games. I first heard about Sable Island from a book in a used bookstore In regards to the horses names, well, it personalizes them to a certain extent. Believe a extratropical storm is moving past. I also knew of it from "The Perfect Storm." I decided it was time to know more. I looked at it on Google.Earth which has a rather poor picture and then found this site. Now I am an expert on Sable Island. Ask me anything. Marvelous site. Very interesting and informative. Was quite interested to see a white wing dove. I'm familiar with white wings from having grown up in South Texas. Bremerton, Washington. Oct 02, 2006: cool Sep 30, 2006: My husband and I are raising POA ponys. For me naming my ponys is much like naming a child. I want something different but that also has meaning to me as much as to the horse whom will carry the name I choose for him for the reat of his life. Sep 22, 2006: Hello, Not sure exactly who will receive this email, but I just wanted to send a quick note to tell you how thrilled I am to have found your terrific web site. I have been vacationing in Nova Scotia now for the past 4 years and just returned two weeks ago from this years trip. While visiting in Halifax I picked up a copy of the book “Sable Island Journals 1801-1804” by James Rainstorpe Morris. As with any good book, you create images in your mind while reading and the thrill for me is to find this web site, view the photo’s and find they are exactly as I had imagined. I can’t wait to spend some time checking into all the info you have posted. Please keep up the excellent work. Thanks! Sep 22, 2006: I am interested in Horse names as i am searching for a suitable name for my now 3 1/2 week old foal. I found your site by accident but spent ages looking through the lovely pictures of the horses on here Sep 21, 2006: Sable Island is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sep 18, 2006: hi i'm torymy class is doing a report on hores and reading pit ponny Sep 14, 2006: Hi, I am a nobody concerning the camera but I do have a idea how to find the owner. Try putting it on sale on Ebay for $4000.00 dollars or free only if you know the serial number and are the owner. This way if people are looking for underwater stuff and come across the camera you may have a better chance at finding the owner or someone that knows the owner, and no one would bid on it because the price would be to much money and no one would buy it. Just a idea I had when I seen the post on Sable island stuff. Ontario, Canada Sep 14, 2006: your book stunk Sep 12, 2006: This is a realy good site Aug 24, 2006: cool, A horse island. Aug 23, 2006: Excellent webiste very good work and design you get A+ or 99% how about some interesting info about some of those ships down on the floor of those waters in and around sable! Aug 15, 2006: Thank you so much for putting together such a wonderful site. The pictures are absolutely beautiful! I am especially fond of the horse pictures and found out about your island through an exhibit of the wild horses in Montreal. If you need me to sign a petition to keep a human presence on the island in order to take care of the wildlife please send it to me … or, if there is a specific website or location that I and my friends can go to please advise. Many thanks! Aug 13, 2006: I began reading a book on Sable Island I wanted to see more images of both the island and its most populous inhabitants. When I started reading about the horses I realized that the names bring a certain intimacy to a very wild group that appear to have no relationahip to 'man'kind. We naturally want to know what makes these particular animals individulas (as they are) because they appear so unconnected to our world -i.e., how to anthropomorphize them. I wish I knew more about how long the animals live and more about their lives in general. Aug 04, 2006: Dear Zoe Lucas, I've been visiting this site for years. Thank you so much for the phenomenal work you do. I have a little saltbox in Nfld. on the ocean, somewhat remote, but in relation to Sable Island - in the middle of New York City… I can appreciate the call of the wildness of the ocean, the wind, being at the mercy or blessing of the weather. I have no questions - well, I have many questions, but none to ask… Take good care. Aug 02, 2006: thanks for the info - very complete. Beautiful pictures. Magical place. The drawing of the green horses in a wreath-like ring would make a great T-shirt to sell. Anyway - maybe I'll get there someday! Aug 01, 2006: Hello, This question might sound strange, but are people allowed to purchase a horse or just bring a horse from the island to the main land? Thanks for your time, have a great day!
Aug 01, 2006: I thought the special that was shown on Discovery HD about the local seals being attacked by possible Greenland sharks was a complete waist of my time!!! There was no conclusion to the hypothesis which left me irritated. I can't believe there was a documentary on this subject with no conclusion - absolutley rediculous. You owe me one hour of my time. Have fun on your vacation at Sable Island. I was so irritated that I had to write you this message. Good day. Jul 17, 2006: this was the most beautiful thing i've ever seen, i love seeing horses but something about seeing them in there natural element, i can't even put it into words! I didn't even know that canada had wild horses until today, thats great. You've done an excellent job w/ the pictures & brief description, i especially liked that each horse had there own name. once again thank you for allowing me to get a glimpse of such beauty. Jul 11, 2006: I really enjoyed your website. Beautiful photographs. My husband and I recently watched a film that included Sable Island and the wild horses. We are both veterinarians in Washington state in the United States and were intrigued about the horses. There has obviously been a lot of time and thought put into the web site. Thank you. Jul 11, 2006: Hi, Love your site. I'm from New-Brunswick. Great information. Jun 27, 2006: Thsi website is very cool like like it very much Jun 23, 2006: I was surprised to find such an involved web site devoted to Sable Island, my home for two years (1971, 1972). I believe Zoe Lucas' first visit was during that time. She was so thrilled to be able to spend some time on the island. It would appear that that visit spawned a lifetime love and devotion to Sable Island and its significance and survival. Jun 23, 2006: hey!! cool this is so great i love horsis! love ya. Jun 23, 2006: Hey!! cool and I love the Horses!! Jun 22, 2006: The reason that the horse names facinate me is that it makes an animal into "Goblin". This makes it more personal. Jun 15, 2006: For many seasons my 1st cousin has worked on sable and i find this site of great interest good work on the site and links i would really like to see more on the ship wrecks and history of the island thank lance … Jun 13, 2006: I lovvvvve this site Jun 13, 2006: I just had to tell you that this site is very helpful, and just seeing a small picture of them makes me happy. If I could have a horse, I`d want one that looks like a Sable Island one. Not a real one though, because Sable Island horses should stay free. Jun 13, 2006: oh my god these horses soould be left alone and they sould be able to run wild these horses are very cute and i hope they are left alone GREAT SITE Jun 13, 2006: hi i love the sight i feel really bad four the animals May 22, 2006: very, very interesting and great! Pictures. old orchard beach, maine May 17, 2006: thank you for all the information you gave me on the web site, i happen to see a program last night on tv ontario about the seals on sable island and just had to find out some more information about the island and the horses thanks again. STOUFFVILLE, ON May 16, 2006: Horses are cute so you must have a good website for fans of horses May 13, 2006: I love your web site and someday it is my dream to visit this beautiful, wild island. May 01, 2006: loved your site will read more on next visit Apr 27, 2006: Your site is interesting and informative with supported by truly beautiful photography. I was especially impressed with the photos of the Sable Island Horses and wondered who the photographers were? Would it be possible to have photo credits either in the cutline or perhaps as a mouse roll-over with photographer details? Keep up the wonderful work! Apr 25, 2006: My daughter is getting a new Stallion on thursday 27/04/2006 and we are looking for a suit able name for him. thanks for a great site. South Africa Apr 18, 2006: What a great site thanks so much it very imformative but I have a few more qestions. Has there ever been navy presence on the Island. If so when and what were the duties of these men? How long did they stay? Is there documentation ofany navy personnel dying on the Island? Would like to receive any info. Apr 18, 2006: Hello, For School my partner and I have been assigned to do a heritage fair project. We chose to do it on Sable Island. I was told to visit this site and I'm glad I did. This site gives me all the
interesting facts about this island and will help me with researching on
this beautiful island. I would like to thank the people who have helped me
with the research so far. I would really like to further my investigation on
sable island and i would really appreciate your help with any interesting
facts. Thank You for all your help. Apr 06, 2006: Im a horse lover and i think that you guys are doing a vey great job at taking care for the horses! thanks Apr 02, 2006: i learned alot of Sable Island i think it is very interesting and alittle scary because of all the shipwrecks but other then that it was great Mar 25, 2006: I have been fasinated with Sable Island and the horses. I have always loved horses since I was a little girl. My uncle used to tease me and say when I grow up I will marry a rancher or farmer. Since moving to Nova Scotia and hearing about Sable Island I have been craving to see pictures of it. I have visited the Sable Island website many times. But it didn't give me much pictures. So I did a search on the web for sites. I came across your site and have visited it numberous times and still haven't gotten through all your information and pictures. On one page on your site you asked these questions: The Society is curious... why are so many visitors interested in horses' names? We would really appreciate hearing from these visitors... what are you looking for, why the particular interest in names? Please leave your comments in the Guest Book. I was not so interested in the horse's names as I was in seeing pictures of them. It has always been one of my dreams to visit the island and see the horses. As I know that will not be likely in my lifetime, I love to visit your site and see the pictures of the horses. They are so magnificient and beautiful. Keep up the good work. I did get to see one of the Horses at a Zoo in Nova Scotia. How did it get there and why? The biggest fan of the Sable Island Horses. Mar 24, 2006: I just LOVE your website and all of the photos of the horses! Thank you very much! ... Cheers …Burritts Rapids, Ontario. Mar 22, 2006: Great website, I am more informed about Sable Island now for sure. Are there any job oppertunities or volenteer work needed over the summer of 06'? Mar 20, 2006: Miss Lucas I found a small error in a caption for pic 6b though correct at time of insertion. - should read one unmanned or there were two unmanned lights one being deactivated (West Light by Coast Guard July 2004). Once again kudos for a five star site. Bye for Now. Mar 18, 2006: This is my first visit to this web sight. It's such a great web page. I phoned my friend and told him to log on to Sable Island for a real treat. Great work. This is one sight I will revisit. Thanks. Scarborough ON. Mar 18, 2006: Thank you so much for all the information and the beautiful pictures, everything is just so wonderful so far. I have not gotten past the "horse" category yet, and I am excited to see whats next. How wonderful it would be to visit Sable Island and spend some time there. You are most fortunate. I shall be visiting this site over and over again, as I never tire of animals and nature. Thank you again. Mar 16, 2006: Great information about a place I never knew existed until I stumbled upon it in an atlas and wanted to know more. Beautiful pictures of the four seasons on the island and especially the wildflower pictures. Thank you. Contoocook, New Hampshire USA Mar 11, 2006: Great site and info. Like to see more pics and info on the sharks and its behavior changes (feeding)over the past decade? Are there fewer sharks or more? More seals or less? I am quite interested in your research Zoe. I always see the Island and find it very mystical Great Job By All. Mar 09, 2006: Great website i wish i had one like it! Mar 03, 2006: what a terrific web site. I would love to visit Sable Island. I am very interested in the horses and bird life. I have a cabin in the Annapolis Valley, NS. Keep up the great work. It keeps me going in the office. Mar 02, 2006: I came across this website while I was examining the Rare Breeds of Canada website. Does anyone or any type of organization, keep track of the Sable Island horses? Are they prospering? Or are their numbers declining? I have a genuine interest in horse breeds that are becoming extinct or on their way to be. I love horses deeply and have been a horse keeper all of my adult life. My question is, are these horses the descendants of the Newfoundland ponies? A domesticated version? Do they still have the pony drive where the horses are culled and separated? I always worried about the foals and how they managed if they were separated to soon. That is just my nurturing instinct kicking in. Are there any Sable Island horses that have been trained to be ridden, (the ones that have been caught) or are they just too wild? I thought the website was very well done and easy to navigate. Job well done. Kindest regards… Feb 24, 2006: Dear Zoe, i am from Annapolis Maryland USA. I just saw the program on the killing of the Grey seals and it made me very concerned i know that the documentary said you had a falling out with the other researchers and i would like to know what your point of view is on the subject. they failed to mention this on the documentary. i would also like to know if there are any programs to help with funding for the island and its research projects. I find it very interesting that the sharks only consumed the upper half of the prey, wouldn't this have immobilized the seal giving the predator the opportunity to eat the other half as well? Has there been any more evidence of the preditor being the Greenland shark and if it is the preditor has there been anything done to help the seal population? Well thanks for your time. i hope to hear from you soon. Feb 20, 2006: I am doing a project on Sable Island horses and I need to make a bar graph I have a pretty good idea about what I would like to do it on. But I can't find the right info for it could you e-mail me and tell me what Sable Island horses eat and how much they eat of it? And how many foals and mare and stallions their are on Sable? Thanks so much!!! Feb 17, 2006: Thank you very much for sharing this information and the wonderful photos of this beautiful, delicate island! Halifax, N.S. Feb 17, 2006: Hi your site is very nice could you add more graphs and stuff. Thanks!!!!! Feb 16, 2006: very good site - well done. Scotland Feb 16, 2006: After viewing the movie "Touching Wild Horses," I found your website. I've spent more than an hour reading so much information! Thank you for such a thorough site. I am concerned about Exxon Mobile drilling so close to your wonderful Island, but I am so glad that you have all the monitoring equipment and are using it. Enjoy being in such a pristine place. Feb 14, 2006: After seeing some of the pics and reading all the info about Sable Island, now even more I would love to live and work there. Right now I am sitting in my nice air cond villa here in Saudi Arabia, with outside temps at night of 28c planning to return to nova scotia soon, even sooner if I can get a resume thru to Envirocan. I will keep trying and check your site to keep up to date, in the meantime back to sand and dust here in saudi, bye for now. Feb 11, 2006: I have always heard about these wonderful horses. I checked out the foals first then looked at the names. I would be inerested in knowing the hight of these horses. Also do you cull the herd or let nature take it's course? I have a horse and two ponies and I can never get enough of these beautiful animals. The site is great and the photo's are lovely. Makes me want to visit. Vancouver Island, British Columbia Feb 08, 2006: I am interested in the naming of the horses beacause it shows that people care enough about these horses to take the time to pick out names. This shows the rest of us who are interested in the well being of these horses that there are people out there looking after them. Thanks for all that you do to ensure the safety of the horses. Also the web site is fantastic and I have learned alot more than I did before I looked at the web site. keep up the good work. Feb 06, 2006: Just a thank you for this site! It is wonderful. Feb 03, 2006: A wonderful site! I loved the pictures of all the animals, especially the horses, at the various stages in their lives. Thank you …Los Angeles Jan 06, 2006: Hi I think Sable Island is interesting, I would like to visit the island some day, I just love horses my bedroom is full of horses stuff. I am just wondering how did horses get on the island in the first place? plz e-mail back. Jan 02, 2006: I have had an interest in Sable Island since the early 60's when I lived in Nova Scotia. Your web site has truley shed light on many of the mysteries surrounding this unique part of Canada. It is an excellent site and I certainly appreciate the many, many hours that must have been devoted to it's development. Thank you. One interest that I have about Sable Island is it's geographical development. How did this island originally come into being? I know that it's make-up is entirely of sand and it is subjected to nature's ravages, why then does it not just blow away in the winds? For all intents and purposes, it has nothing to sustain itself, so why is it there? Again, thank you for this wonderful voyage to Canada's remotest and most interesting island. Ontario Jan 02, 2006: I am a Newfie living in Florida. For some strange reason today I thought about Sable Island. At some point in my schooling we had learned about Sable Island. I decided to check out the web and see what I could find. A very interesting site. Thank you. |
