Nov 30, 2008: WISH THERE WAS A WAY TO VISIT THIS MYSTICAL PLACE AND SEE THESE INCREDIBLE HORSES...IT IS FASCINATING. I FEEL I NEED TO BE A PART OF THIS PLACE, HOW CAN WE PARTICIPATE TO KEEP THIS PLACE AS IT IS, WITHOUT INTERFERING BUT AT THE SAME ENSURE PROTECTION FOR THE ANIMALS ESPECIALLY FROM NATURAL ELEMENTS.

Nov 15, 2008: Hi my
name is Nicholas, and i was wondering how the horses got onto Sable Island?
Nov 12, 2008: Good site! great job, thanks
Nov 11, 2008: Not bad... Not bad.
Nov 11, 2008: Nice site, thanks for information!
Nov 10, 2008: You lucky lucky people. Have you a job for a 74 year lady ----well not quite lady----who can cook. How I envy you. Keep as many people away as is possible. Doris van Nostrand
Nov 07, 2008: Hola! I was just looking quickly at your site and I was very surprised at how much information it actually has. Id like to thank you for that. Sincerly/truly yours, BB Rose.
Nov 07, 2008: i love this site gotta love it -jamie
Nov 07, 2008: Hi.
I have a question.. how long does it take you to name your horses? sincerly,
Nov 07, 2008: WOW! I really enjoyed looking at this site! it was amazing to know how beautiful the Island actually is. I really didn't know that most of the Horses on Sable Island were wild horses. Many of the horses that I have seen on this website were very beautiful. I also enjoyed learning about the other name for Sable Island "The Graveyard Of The Atlantic". I did not know it was called that. But I do have a question, why do you guys call yourself the Green Horse Society? Thanks for listening and reading this question. Sincerly, Brianna R.
Nov 06, 2008: I just watched the movie, "Touching Wild Horses." Although it is the story of a young boy recovering from family tragedy, the horses are what drew my interest to the film. The existence and survival of these horses on such a small island in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean for hundreds of years is an awesome mystery. I applaud all who have contributed to their safety and protection. Kudos, also to the creators of this web site! JV., Austin, Texas
Nov 04, 2008: this website has every thing its so good i used it for my project thanks Oct 19, 2008: Hi, My name is Rebecca L, I am in grade 4 and am doing a class project on the horses of sable island. I use your site a lot. Thankyou for all the awsome info and pictures. Can you tell me how many horse are on Sable Island now? Thanks Rebecca
Oct 14, 2008:
Thank you all for the excellent work you are all doing, it is very
informative web site, and very well produced. I was very shocked to have
seen the amount of litter brought onto your shores,
Oct 13, 2008: were there any 2007 - 2008 foals? i would love to see pics of them if there were. and do the horses only live on the island or do people have any on the mainland? I live in Sussex , NB. and love to see the pics you have , but was disspointed to not see any 2008 horse photos . Im only 11 but this is probbley my fav. breed i have studdied. ever since i seen this site in late 2006 i would always come back to see if there were any new photos of the horses , but have not seen any yet .. did you guys forget about them or something? I'll continue too look here to see if you answered my questions or if you added any more photos, Brooke
Oct 06, 2008: I just watched the documetary on The Wild Horses Of Sable Island. The photos were hauntingly beautiful. Your website is very interesting. I had never heard of Sable Island. I was truly proud that it was part of Canada. I can only hope that as Canadians we protect the horses and Sable Island for our future generations to observe in the wild on film. Thank-you....Carolyne
Oct 06, 2008: I saw a documentary on the horses and wanted to learn more. why click on the naming horses link? I was curious to see what the gene pool looked like and how many of the horses had been identified. Very beautiful and as a Canadian so proud that Canada has opted to protect this unique environment.
Oct 03, 2008: I appreciate the information... God Bless and Best wishes...... Sincerley S. Vance in Bakersfild CA.
Oct 03, 2008:... no visitors, but the Oil and Gas industry can just take a piss all over the place.
Oct 03, 2008: Hmmmmm... seems to me I just read that there were "no people" allowed on Sable Island by the Can government, despite the weatherstation, etc., and certainly no visitors. How the hell can someone as arogant as you be allowed to go there again and again....???? You can be sure that I will be contacting my representative about this. (Hope that next time, your plane crashes...)
Sep 25, 2008: I am from Nantucket, a small island off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Apparently all too many of the fishing vessels that set out from these parts have met their doom near Sable Island - that is how I first found out about the island and found this website. Looking at the pictures, Sable reminds me so much of Nantucket! The rolling dunes, low vegetation, huge flocks of sea birds, freshwater ponds - not to mention the isolation! I grew up an equestrian and have always been intrigued by wild horses. So it is crazy to see pictures of the amazing and beautiful Sable Island horses roaming around an island that looks so much like my own (we could, obviously, never play host to bands of wild horses - way too many people and cars - we are overrun only by nuisance deer!) And as to your questions about why people are curious about the names of the horses - I stumbled upon the 'Naming Horses' page - but I find it so interesting because it gives them such personality and makes them seem like the true residents and stewards of the island (not to mention - I can certainly understand that humans so isolated on such a small spit of land would want to give names to their fellow islanders!) --Kelly
Sep 23, 2008:
These beautiful horse are just that, and so remain on their island. Lets
protect a part of our Canadian pride and keep these lovley animals
protected and wild. So many things in My country Canada, has gone to ruin,
lets please keep this sacred and keep it wild. Please I beg you leave it
wild and sacred.
Sep 13, 2008: My Dream, now is to be in the presence of these beautiful horses that god has put on this earth to roam quietly on this Island of white sandy beaches & to have a place to run free with nature. The peacefulness of the mane flowing with the tall grass & wind is breathtaking. The faces & eyes of the horses bring tears to my eyes knowing that they are calm & would'nt hurt a soul as we invade the space they call home. I will someday visit this Island & look into the eyes of the most beautiful animal on this earth ~ Shannon from California, but now in Ontario Canada on my way to ..... Sable Island
Sep 12, 2008: To me, names are of no importance. I have named my two mares, but rarely do I use them when I talk to them or call for them. I just say "hello!" and they come running as it is treat time. I love your site. It makes me very emotional when I read it. I just pray that the Canadian Government leaves thing alone. We need this island, and its inhabitants to keep flourishing with the island. Humans have destroyed too many things as it is, and will keep doing so. I just hope this is not one of them. Thank you. LG, Calgary, Alberta
Sep 09, 2008: This site does a wonderful job describing the environment and conditions of Sable Island. The power of nature is awesome especially at a place on earth where wild horses, marine birds and mamals can co-exist with limited exposure with man. It does disburb that oil discharges from marine cargo ships can do so much damage with no repercussions. Wouldn't it be wonderful if laws required ships to add additives to their oil so that discharges could be tracked to individual ships and that owners could be charged with the damage they create. That would end this practice rapidly and help save thousands of birds each year. Mike M., Virginia, USA
Aug 17, 2008: I was so delighted to read your article in the Herald this morning and get a site like this.I have never ever, watched any program that had near enough for me,on Sable.I am so happy to finally get my fill and I agree with you, there should be NO seal hunting there. It isn't the hunting per se,just not on Sable Island. Thanks again! SB
Aug 06, 2008: Thank you for posting the winners of the Sable Island Raffle as the actual web site ( Read By The Sea) has not. A slight oversight I'm sure. RD
Aug 05, 2008:
Great site, alot of interesting information and aewsome pictures, keep up
the good work !!
Aug 04, 2008: Nice photos. How do you get that close to the wild horses?
Jul 30, 2008: I saw a documentary just yesterday on the TV in Australia and I have fallen in love with the place. What a unique little piece of the earth. Congratulations to all who are working there and looking after a very precious environment. I am so grateful to you all.
Jul 29, 2008: Great website, well done- Very informative and interesting and enjoyable. Am interested to know what keeps the population under control- Do they run out of food over winter? Does the weather get the better of the old and the very young? Do males occasionally kill eachother? What is the average lifespan of a Sable horse? Also wondering what breed of horse they most closely resemble or are related to. Are they recognized as a breed in their own right? Thankyou, and good luck in keeping up the valuable work that you do on the island.
Jul 29, 2008: I am very interested in this group of horses after seeing a doco on TV about them. I feel knowing the names makes you feel closer to them even at a distance. Being an artist I would love to paint or sculpt them. Thanks for your website, Leila Desborough
Jul 19, 2008: I've been curious about Sable Island since a return flight from the UK. some 30 years ago. The Pan Am pilot was so excited to share the Islands history and beauty, on what was a crystal clear autumn day, that he actually took us from our Polar course heading to circle the Island. Needless to say, it was breathtakingly unforgettable...symbolic of the way the world used to be. Anyway, we have our memories. I will revisit now that I've found you. Thanks so much! Tina. Los Angeles, CA, USA.
Jul 14, 2008: I have been to this site so many times, and I never get tired of looking at the horses and reading the info on them and the island. I purchased a ticket to spend one day on the island and I am so hoping the I am the lucky person to win. It would be a dream come true. I think it is so important to keep the island going and supporting the wild life there. I could be very happy living/working there. I hope all of you who are working that at present know how fortunate you are to have had this chance. Enjoy it while it lasts. J. King, Nova Scotia
Jul 06, 2008: My daughter of 4 years old loves horses. This part of the site is full of pictures of them. I'm not sure how much she understands about them being on a far island in the sea.
Jun 28, 2008: Oh how I would love to visit Sable Island! Thank you for the website which may be the closest I'll ever come to Sable Island. I wish I was there right now. Bye
Jun 27, 2008: Fantastic and utterly fascinating website! The photos are first rate, especially of the majestic horses roaming freely. I first heard of Sable Island because of the latest DX-pedition of several Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) operators that were making radio contacts from Sable.
Jun 07, 2008: Hello: I was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and never bothered to find out about SABLE ISLAND until today. I'm so proud to call myself a Canadian but live here now on Long Island New York. How I miss Canada and go back to visit as often as I can. I had heard of wild horses on the Island and I'm impressed to what amount there are there. Your web site is very informative and I'm glad I saw an article on line from Halifax about Sable Island and I've been checking it out. I would hope one day to take a ride to visit the Island as I love the sea and the tranquility of the place. When I'm in distress I know I shall re-visit it in my nind or come back on the computer and see it again. Thanks for allowing me to visit pictorially and descriptions here on line. I've learned so much about the birds, wild flowers and even shipwrecks. Sincerely, M DeR, NY.
Jun 03, 2008: your website is awsome
Jun 01, 2008: Hi my name is Shannnon . I`m originally from Alberta, but now reside in New Brunswick. This a terrific website, I especially like all the photos of the horses. I really think it would be a shame for the Canadian government to close the station down. If it weren`t for your efforts these poor horses and.other wild life would be put into great danger, as it from your efforts that keep.the general public away from the island. This island does not need to be exploited by the selfishness of man. Thank you very much. Shannon
May 30, 2008: I just checked out your site after watching the movie, Touching Wild Horses. This is a wonderful site. I do wish people weren't so dirty. All the trash that washes up on shore is disgusting. It angers me to see animals getting killed just by discarded trash. Sandy
May 29, 2008: ggoooodd
May 27, 2008: Thank you so much for keeping Sable Island working well and continuing to protect it! I really like horses and would hate to see anything bad happen to Sable Island. Jenna
May 25, 2008: nice website looks alot different than where I live in Arizona
May 24, 2008: I worked on Sable I in 1972-73 & retained an interest. A very good site, but I think you should fill in the history as there is a huge gap. I actually saw a live white rabbit on the Island in 1972, a survivor of the drive to exterminate these environmentally dangerous introductons.
May 20, 2008: Boring!!!!!!!!!!!
Apr 29, 2008: Hi my name is Holly my email is Hollybug9199 People If you ever find a graish and brownish with tiger sterip`s you should call it Inga.I love horses they are my favourite thing I do horse back riding at Hlafx juoner Bangellansires in Nova Scota and I alwas wonted to go to Sabel Isiand.
Apr 26, 2008: My husband and I really loved the site. We'll go back to it many more times. The horses are our favorites also. Keep up the good work on the site.
Apr 22, 2008: SABLE ISLAND ROX!!!!!!
Apr 19, 2008: i worked on sable 1967 drilling for oil with mobil have lots of pictures of horses & seals.
Apr 14, 2008: The photos are amazing. I am speechless actually. I love horses and anything to do with horses and seeing them in this environment is something else. I must say, I had a tear or two in my eyes looking at the winter photos as it must be hard on them that they do not have a roof over their head. Could not some lean to's be built just to add some protection from the winter blasts and the summer heat? I would fund raise for the society if ever this should take place. J King, Nova Scotia.
Apr 13, 2008: I think you should tell people what breeds the horses are
Apr 11, 2008: Hi there from south shields united kingdom spent some time on venture platform and could see sable island from there and your web site is brilliant very informative thanks Derek Seymour U.K
Apr 07, 2008: Thank you for keeping the island alive, well and of interest. It is an important element in my family history. My great-grandfather was Superintendent in the early-mid 1900's. My grandfather, who spent several years as a child on the island, is still living. He is my idol. I care for him daily. My last (3rd) daughter is named Sable, in his honor. I have three great uncles, and one great aunt, still living - all of whom spent years as children on Sable. It is my dream to someday, soon, visit Sable. Andrea, Halifax, Nova Scotia
Apr 07, 2008: Sable Island is serenity & life. The pictures are amazing, the horses are majestic & knowing. Keep up the work to keep it functioning & alive. karen
Apr 07, 2008: I
recently watched the lovely documentary on Sable Island. Thank you so much
to the Sable Island staff, Zoe and Jerry, for allowing Mr. Dutesco capture
the animal history of this magical place. All my life, I have had this
dream to live far away on an island, ride horses and care for the land. I
had no idea this place actually existed. What's more, I learned that in
order for the beauty to continue, people have to be kept from living on a
place like this. It gave me so much to consider. Another coincidence is
that my first daughter is named Sable. I named her Sable after the colour
- blackish brown and smooth, like sand. I had heard that there was an
island named Sable, but I didnt even know it was in Canada, my beloved
home. Needless to say, I learned so much, gained so much knowledge and
held onto to so much lasting beauty from this piece. Bravo to Bravo ! and
Bravo to you, Sable Island, may your beauty continue, unabated.
Apr 06, 2008: I was just watching a show about these horses on channel 27. I dont remember the mans name but he took such beautiful pictures. At the end of the show they showed around his gallery. "The Wild Horses Of Sable Island" He took such amazing pictures. I loved the one where one horse... it kindve looked like he was kissing the other one. And one more where two were splashing in the water!!! I am so passionate about horses. But I dont have any of my own. So watching shows about horses is fun cause I love seeing them. I love to be around them at ranches where you go on trail rides and at camps...like Circle Square Ranch and stuff. There were so many assigned activities and lots of things to do there, but the horses were about the only thing I ever looked forward to every day when I woke up for the whole week at camp. My horse was a little stubborn be he was really beautiful, big and brown. His name was chauncey. Anyway I liked watching this show because I liked watching the wild horses be free and doing there own thing! Hannah winnipeg, mb
Apr 06, 2008: I would guess that the interest in the horses names is due to the wish to be able to name one of these lovely animals - sort of a distant attachment to a creature so untouched by our world. I have so enjoyed the photos on the website.....
Apr 05, 2008: Wonderfull ! Thank you for images and information. Altay - Kusadasi - Turkey
Apr 05, 2008: 7NkCeJ hi nice site thanks
Apr 04, 2008: Hi: Just spent some time on your web-site. Most enjoyable and informative to say the least. Must be quite a life working on the island. It must remain as a sanctuary. Roly
Apr 03, 2008: nice
Mar 27, 2008: SABLE ISLAND ROX HARD!!! -Addison .J
Mar 24, 2008: I have always been fascinated with Sable Island and it's occupents. My ancestors are from Newfoundland (Bay Roberts). Last year my sister and I visited "The Rock". The only members of our family to return to our roots. It was astounding! My only regret is that I never made it to Sable Island. Some day!!! But in the mean time, I greatly appreciate the ability to view the wonderful sights on line, especially the horses. THANK YOU !
Mar 23, 2008: While living in the southern U.S., I had come across information on Sable Island and had always been curious on how it came to be.Sadly, it wasn't until I moved away that I had gained awareness that Sable Island even existed , (moved from Fredericton) This site is very informative and I have truly enjoyed the information and photo's.I do have a question .Is there any evidence that the horses swim?
Mar 21, 2008: Sable Island has to be one of the most amazing places on the planet. Thank you for creating such an informative and detailed website. To see horses living so naturally is truly wonderful. The Organic Team at Stone Circle Livery.
Feb 21, 2008: A truly beautiful site! Sable Island is filled with a mystique and a special beauty all its own. Truly a Canadian treasure!!! Hopefully the Canadian Government will see the wisdom in continuing to preserve Sable Island as a Canadian Heritage Site! If there is a financial impact involved, perhaps steps could be taken to arrange guided educational tours of Sable Island so that Canadians can experience firsthand and celebrate the wonder of this location. J., P., and D. Waye, Ontario
Feb 19, 2008: this is a lovely site with beautiful pictures. and gives a lot of information about Sable Island. Jaya
Feb 17, 2008: I'm glad to find you! I read this site's review on 'Touching wild horses', and I'm happy that a documentary was my first contact with the island, not the film! (On Discovery channel CA, about the greenland shark and the odd bite marks on seals). In 2003, I entered the world of horses. I began care for one, and I have much to explore. Magic, my mare, got me thinking about her history, her sacrifices, her discoveries, all that horses made possible for me, and all humans. I am very interested in wild horses. I know that there are almost no 'real' wild horses, except in Mongolia were they where re-bred and re-introduced. When I saw this documentary, I was curious; I did not know of Sable Island. In here, I found most of what I wanted, except maybe a full-length documentary on the subject... I am worried. With the climate change, and many studies about it's mechanisms, I can only fear our future. Mankind has little time left to make massive changes, and the faster it's needed, the more time governments take to think about these changes. I wouldn't mind seeing humans disappear from Earth, but I do mind about the other living creatures, like horses... I hope I can leave Magic a planet she can still live on... Montreal, Quebec.
Feb 15, 2008: Very nice web site and some very usefull info for a prarie boy like myself. I love reading the articles mostly about the horses. Feb 03, 2008: Just spent an hour enjoying your website.
Read Janet's scathing review of Touching Wild Horses. Holy cow! Bet Jane
S slinked under the bed when she read that. Great write up on Susan Tooke!
Jan 31, 2008: There is so much interesting info on this
site. Will save it, and return to it many times.

Jan 28, 2008: I enjoyed the pictures and comments about the horses. I learned about Sable Island and the horses from the movie "Touching Wild Horses", with Jane Seymour. Judy C. In CT, USA
Jan 28, 2008: Great web site. I was wondering if the ponies are fed by the government in the wintertime, I mean is there hay dropped off to them by ships? The Sable Island Pony resembles the Newfoundland Pony. I own Newfoundland Ponies. I was also wondering if any of the Sable Island Ponies are ever captured and brought over to the mainland? Thank you kindly...Debbie
Jan 9, 2008: Incredible place! I've been to NS and loved it, however Sable
is for the scientists for sure!
Jan 07, 2008: GREAT Website! My only wish is that I could visit the island
one day!
Jan 05, 2008: Wow, I can't believe that the horses are still around! Colleen Mcnulty.
Jan 02, 2008: Hi, I am from Miramichi NB. I love your site, i was always intreged with sable island. i would love to go there someday, just to get away would be great, but there, away from everything and everybody, thats my dream. Well great site, keep it up. crystal sobey.
Jan 02, 2008: Hi! I think that those of us who visit the site and view the pictures and histories of the horses with names, is that the names provide a kind of anchor in our minds to make the horse a more tangible entity. Our minds then fill in the blanks and lightly give the horse a personality possibily associated with the names. Also, for those of us who not only love horses but history, we enjoy the connection each horse provides to the past horses and history of the island. They are a link in the chain! I would enjoyy seeing a "family tree" posted on the website with pictures of the horses with each name or each name being a link to a picture of the horse. Thanks! Mike |
