In spring 1999, construction materials and observatory equipment were transported to Sable Island by an offshore industry helicopter. Care was taken to minimize damage to the vegetation cover in the construction area. Wooden walkways were used to protect vegetation from foot traffic and movement of equipment. The site of an observatory must be magnetically clean. The units housing the instruments, as well as associated walkways, were constructed of fibreglass, plastic, wood and cement, with copper, brass and aluminum nails, screws and fittings. |
