A fluxgate sensor, mounted on the telescope of a non-magnetic theodolite, is used to detect when the theodolite is perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field. Collimation errors between the fluxgate sensor and the optical axis of the theodolite and within the theodolite are minimized by taking readings from four telescope positions. True north is determined by reference to a fixed mark of known azimuth.
