The point of known azimuth - a red and white marker about 8 cm across - is located on the foundation of the hydrogen shed. Its position was determined during installation of the observatory using astronomical methods (taking a reading from the position of the sun) and by using a gyro attachment. During calibration, the theodolite must be sighted on this small mark, thus good visibility is essential.
