Grey seal on Sable Island. Seals are descended from land mammals. For fast and effective swimming, they have evolved a streamlined and spindle-shaped form. External appendages are minimized - although seals have arm and leg bones similar to land mammals (those of the Order Carnivora), the bases of the limbs (up to elbows and knees) are enclosed within the body. |
