A Sable Island harbour seal in peak condition in late April. Seals have a hairy coat which protects the skin from abrasion and cuts by and rocks when seals are ashore. In springtime the harbour seal’s hair is weathered and faded, and some very faded individuals have a ghost-like appearance.
