An adult female grey seal. Seals have large eyes set in protective cushions of fat. The cornea is flattened, and the pupil is capable of great enlargement to enable better sight in dark water. It is thought that seals’ eyes are sensitive to light in waters as deep as 1000 m where bioluminescence would be the principal light source.
