Paint Sable Island

A seven-day painting workshop on Sable Island, August 2009

with artists Susan Tooke and Richard Rudnicki

(February 2009)

In summer 2009, Halifax-based artists Susan Tooke and Richard Rudnicki are hosting a 7-day visit to Sable Island to draw and paint.

Susan’s media include paint, photography, and digital imaging. In 2006 Halifax she illustrated a children’s picture book about the Sable Island horses, Free as the Wind – Saving the Horses of Sable Island. The book (with text by Jamie Bastedo) was published by Red Deer Press in spring 2007. www.susantooke.com

Richard is a painter, working in pen and ink over acrylic. He is also an illustrator of children's picture books, including Gracie, the Public Gardens Duck, and in 2008 he collaborated with Susan on a large outdoor mural depicting The Great Amherst Mystery. Richard gives private classes and workshops in figure drawing. www.richardrudnicki.com

The visit to Sable Island—August 11th to 17th—will include:

  • Environmental briefing and walk-about with Zoe Lucas

  • Instruction in drawing and painting, with follow-up discussion and critique

  • Opportunities for individuals to paint on their own

  • Evening presentations by Susan and Zoe

  • Meals provided by the European Pantry of Halifax

During inclement weather (in the unlikely event that inclement weather should occur) still life drawing and painting will be held indoors. Assorted Sable Island artifacts—interesting flotsam & jetsam, skulls and bones of whales and dolphins, horses and birds, as well as the seldom-seen skulls and tusks of long-gone walruses—will comprise assemblages for life drawing studies.

Airfare to/from Sable, on-island accommodations, fees, meals, and tax – $5500/person
