Visitors to this website may have noticed that a band stallion called Gem is often mentioned. As a foal he was named Gem to celebrate Joyce’s long relationship with Sable Island. In 2007, writer Jamie Bastedo, using the Green Horse website as a source for the text and scenes in Free as the Wind, took the name Gem for his fictional “old stallion”. Illustrator Susan Tooke used the island’s band stallion Gem as a model for the Gem in Free as the Wind.
